Free family law clinics set for residents of 14th Chancery District
July 12, 2023
Low income residents of Chickasaw, Clay, Lowndes, Noxubee, Oktibbeha and Webster counties may receive free civil legal assistance at two family law clinics scheduled for July 21 and Aug. 4.
A free family law clinic will be held July 21, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Webster County Courthouse located at 6333 Mississippi Highway 9 in Walthall.
Another free family law clinic will be held on Aug. 4, noon to 4 p.m., at the Lowndes County Courthouse, 515 Second Avenue North in Columbus.
The clinics will offer assistance with family law matters including no fault divorces, simple wills, power of attorney, advanced healthcare directives and adult name changes.
The clinics are open to residents of the 14th Chancery District. People seeking assistance must live in one of these counties: Chickasaw, Clay, Lowndes, Noxubee, Oktibbeha and Webster.
The clinics are coordinated by Senior Chancellor Paula Drungole-Ellis and 14th Chancery Court District staff. Local volunteer lawyers, during the scheduled dates only, will provide legal assistance to people who can’t afford to hire an attorney. Attorneys at the legal clinic will help clients prepare documents and provide limited legal advice.
Judge Drungole-Ellis said, “It is just a wonderful opportunity for the volunteering attorneys to give back to their community and also for persons with limited income to receive legal assistance. Last year, we provided two clinics, and they were highly successful. We are hoping that local citizens in our Judicial District will take advantage of these upcoming clinics and share the information with others.”
People seeking assistance from one of the clinics must be screened for eligibility based on income. Income guidelines are available on the website of the 14th Chancery Court district, http://www.14thchanceryms.com.
